At The Garden Gate, we custom design and install and modern metal shade structures, metal fences, gates, trellises, decorative screens and related items. On a new construction project, the landscape plan will identify the location of the structure and other metal work specified, along with design details and elevations.
For existing homes, we provide the same service, and identify existing landscape features that need to be retained or removed to create space for the new structure.

Everyproject is planned around your property, goals, budget, Homeowners Association(HOA) or Design Review Committee (DRC) guidelines, as wellas local rulesand regulations. With 25 years of design and installation experience servingthe greater Tucson area—including Marana and Oro Valley—we deliver a simple,stress-free process for our clients. Every plan is buildable, HOA-ready, andpriced accurately from day one.
Ourcustom front and backyard designs can include:
Sonoran Desert-friendlyor specialty plants, grouped for water efficiency, with drip irrigation and decorative screened rock.
We integrate smart controls, salt-water chlorination systems, color-changinglights, and integrated water walls or bubblers, as well as Baja shelves (alsocalled a tanning ledge or “lagoon” locally), umbrellas, and swim-up bars orin-pool tables and seating.
FromBBQ islands designed for resale value to full outdoor kitchens forentertaining, we place grills, griddles, and pizza ovens to fit the flow ofyour backyard. If you like to entertain, a fire feature adds seating and afocal point.
Code-compliantpool fencing that preserves views, custom steel pergolas and shade structuresfor comfort from the desert sun, trellises to guide vines or screen views, andmetal gates for privacy and security—all integrated into the design.
Our turnkey approach todesign and installation can also include patios, driveways, walkways, retainingwalls, seating walls, and screen walls to hide mechanical equipment (like apool pump), planned with drainage and access in mind.
Path, up-lighting,and down-lighting designed to highlight plants and architecture, creatingambiance.
Year-round,low-maintenance grass solutions for play areas, pets, or entertainment spaces.
Gas,electric, irrigation, and lighting systems are coordinated into one cohesivebuild.
AutoCADdrawings and 3D renderings that ensure accuracy, clarity, and confidence.
We install high quality fencing that defines your space, adds security, and keeps children and animals from leaving the yard - designed to fit in with your home’s architecture and landscape plan.
Standard security fences and code-compliant pool fencing is often a ‘picket style’ made of square metal tubing. Other custom styles are available including an ‘organ pipe’ fence (round tube) and ‘Ocotillo’ fence (made from rebar). They can be painted or have a natural rust finish.
Fences and gates are designed and installed to meet local codes for pool barrier compliance (height, self-close latching and picket spacing). However, if you do not have a pool or spa, we can make them any size you prefer.
Solid metal panels, trellises, and laser cut panels are design elements installed to improve the look of your yard, screen neighbors, create or improve privacy and screen utilities from view.
Your custom metal gateis more than an entryway—it’s an architectural feature that defines your yard. Metal frames with solid metal inserts or, laser cut and decorative panels improve privacy and enhances curb appeal.
Built with the same care, standard view gates (metal frame with picket inserts) are measured and built to fit seamlessly into your metal fence, or between block walls and columns.
Heavy-duty hinges and latches, keypad locks, and self-closing options are available. All selected for a clean professional look and long-term use.
We provide a turnkey solution for the design and installation ofyour shade structure, whether it is a stand-alone project or part of a comprehensive landscape project. One coordinated team. One custom landscape design. All under one roof.
When designing your shade structure, we consider how you will use it and include the features you want. While the primary feature is shade and seating, we regularly include gas, water and electric service, kitchen and counter space with a grill, storage space, drawers, and other accessories or appliances. Lighting, fans and misting systems can also be installed. We can include a masonry wall for enhanced privacy, protection from the weather and placement of a television.
While we can install wood structures, we recommend the use of an engineered metal structure, professionally welded to ensure longevity with lower maintenance costs.
We can integrate kitchen and counter space, televisions, water features, ceiling fans, recessed lighting, heaters and misters to make this a year around destination.
Architectural slats for partial shade and solid longboard panels for full shade are common ceiling designs.
A natural rust finish on metal is a common feature in Tucson, Marana, and Oro Valley. The rain, wind, and sun causes oxidation on the metal that occurs naturally, creating a patina that gets darker with age. Rusted metal is well suited for metal fencing, trellises and screening panels designed to blend into the natural desert.
The rusting process is expedited by spraying the metal with an acidic solution and water, letting the metal dry and repeating the process. This process is utilized for metal pieces that need to be rusted quickly.
All of our metal work can be painted or powder coated in a wide range of colors.
The pinnacle of rust prevention with an almost limitless number of colors and textures is a powder coat finish. Specialized paint is sprayed on clean and dry metal fences, posts, gates and baked in a drying oven to create a permanent protective cover.
Every custom shade structure is built in compliance with HOA and DRC regulations and local building codes by our employees and licensed subcontractors. The shade structure design is reviewed by a structural engineer who determines the final specifications including post wall thickness, welding requirements, and the footer size with rebar sizing to ensure safety and protect against high wind events. Stamped engineering drawings are submitted along with the building permit application.
Installation of fences, gates, and shade structures are scheduled by the Project Coordinator in the proper sequence, along with other landscape and pool work.
Your Project Coordinator is responsible for scheduling subcontractors, our employees, and providing you with updates and progress reports. The Project Coordinator also orders all of the kitchen appliances, lights, fans, and custom features. These are installed by our in-house crew, as directed by the Project Supervisor.
Your shade structure project typically follows this sequence:
● Site measurements and dimensions
● Design details, engineering, permitting and HOA or DRC submittals
● Materials ordered
● Layout shade structure
● Footings excavated and rebar installed
● Inspection
● Posts set, pour concrete footers
● Inspection
● Electrical rough-ins, gas line extensions and water lines stubbed in
● Shade structure and ceiling installed
● Paint, clear coat, stone veneer installed
● Inspection
● Installation of kitchen, grill and appliances and related items
● Client walkthrough
The cost for custom shade structures vary by size, engineering details, and actual construction requirements.
We provide a comprehensive shade structure installation proposal that describes materials of construction including engineering details. We also include pricing for other custom selections including but not limited to the kitchen and grill, masonry walls, gas, water and electric service and light fixtures.
Our metal work is low maintenance and long lasting. We provide a 2-year workmanship warranty and manufacturer warranties pass through to the Owner.
Designconsultations are free. Pool designs—and pool designs that include landscape—aretypically free. Stand-alone landscape designs may incur a nominal design feebased on scope. While landscape design fees can catch clients off guard, theyare critical to making sure the plan is buildable, bid properly, and that the crewsknow what to install. These highly detailed plans are also used for permitting, engineering (when required), and HOA and DRC submittals.
Yes— we specialize in turnkey landscape and pool design-build, with one point ofcontact for design and one for construction. Our team integrates pools, spas, and patios into a cohesive plan that looks intentional. Planning the entireproject from the beginning makes sure nothing is overlooked, installation isdone in the most efficient sequence, and, if the project is phased, rework islimited.
Landscapedesigns typically take 2–4 weeks; pool designs can be completed in about fivebusiness days. While most people view the pool as the more complicated element, the detail in the landscape plan is what ties the entire project togethercohesively, and why it takes more time.
Revisions are a normal part of the design process. Many times, what sounds good in conversation has a much different feel on paper. This is why the design process is so important to a successful project.
